the pakpour lab
The pakpour lab is closing
Dear Current and Former Students,
It is with a very sad heart that I am announcing my resignation from CSU East Bay effective January 14th. I do not do so lightly; I care so very much about all of you and have tried to be the best teacher and mentor possible. However, I am not willing to sacrifice my mental and physical well-being, or my values, in the name of a job.
As some of you may know, this year my department reviewed the breadth of my teaching and research work to determine if I would receive tenure and promotion. Tenure makes my position as an assistant professor permanent on campus. Promotion would have given me a raise and a title change to associate professor. As an associate professor I would have been able to serve on more committees and participate in the governance of the department and university more fully.
Sadly, the Biology Department felt that while I had done enough to deserve tenure and could keep my job, I had not done enough to deserve promotion. I have put my heart and soul into this job, particular over the course of the pandemic, and have worked as hard as is possible for me. I know I did enough to deserve both tenure and promotion. I believe our power in life comes from our choices, and I am choosing to walk away from a place that does not respect me or my work.
What I want each of you to know is that regardless of where I am employed or what my title is, I am here to support you. My door is always open, for advice, for support, for letters of recommendation.
Once my student, always my student.
I wish you all the very best as you move forward in your academic careers. I hope you will wish me the same as I move forward with this new chapter of my life.
Sincerely,
Nazzy Pakpour, PhD

CSUEB IS failing our black students and faculty at CSUEBAlthough CSUEB is one of the most diverse campuses in the CSU system we have some of the worst graduation rates for our students of color, with only 10% graduating in 4 years. The majority of our departments have no Black faculty and in the last 8 years we have lost over 50% of our Black faculty (compared to 10% of our non-Black faculty). These numbers are unacceptable, we need to be doing better! The Pakpour lab is committed to working with others across the campus to help change these abysmal statistics.
